Sands was born on Sept. 9, 1911, in Little Otter, W. Va., to Martin L. and Erlin E. Sands. He retired from the Army in 1959 as a sergeant first class and was an Arizona resident the past 36 years. Sands is survived by his wife, Edra Sands of Tombstone, and four children, Gary (Sherry) Sands of Dragoon, Ariz., Geraline (Hank) Smith of Phoenix, Roy (Donna) Sands, of Huachuca City, and Lena Sampson of Tombstone. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two brothers, Doyle Sands, of Wheaton, MD., and Carl Sands of Gassaway, W. Va., and one sister, Vivian Albright, of Point Pleasant, W. Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association c/o Teresa A.
