ROBERTS, Deborah Jean, age 9, a resident of Wadsworth, drowned on the 31st of May, 1970, in the Kokosing River, at what was then the new camp site operated by Bus Busenburg, near the Caves southeast of Millwood. It was reported in the Mount Vernon News that she was one of five children playing in the 18-inch-deep water when she apparently stepped in a deep hole, lost her balance, fell and was swept down the stream. About 30 minutes later a man coming down the river into the scene in a canoe, jumped in near where Deborah was last seen and soon recovered the body about 25 yards down-river in six feet of water. The parents were camping at the site, the father was canoeing at another location on the river and the mother was not far away, confident her 9-year-old daughter would be safe with 4 other children that were wading in 18 inches of water. She was born in 1961, the daughter of Raymond Roberts of Wadsworth, Medina County, Ohio. Burial at Woodlawn cemetery, Wadsworth is suspected but not confirmed. TJD2013
