He was born in Hood River to Ernest and Alta (McClain) Samuel. He graduated from Hood River High School in 1942. Don served in the Navy as a pilot. He attended Oregon State College where he met Opal Boyle. They were married April 11, 1948. Donald graduated from Oregon State College with a business degree. He played basketball and football for the Beavers. In 1949 he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Donald was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was a State Farm Agent for 32 years and retired in 1986. He was a longtime member of the Elks and Moose lodges. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and golf. Don is survived by his daughter, Gayle Samuel Larsen of Corvallis; sons David and wife Janet of Albany, Scott of Corvallis, and Daniel and wife Kathy of Sunnyvale, Calif.; brother C.E. "Sam" Samuel of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, on June 2, 2002.
