Edward was sent to live with Abraham Foust at an early age. Abraham was listed as his next of kin when Edward enlisted in the army. Tracy Wharton provided the following information: "Edward was a somewhat dubious character at best. His family owned several farms around the Turkeyfoot Lake area of Akron. Edward also owned a farm in the Turkeyfoot Lake area. Sometime after he married Martha, he decided Martha disliked living on the farm, and Martha thought he wanted to live in town. The farm was sold and they moved to Greenburg before the realization that they both liked the farm."
