In the 1900 census I believe Jack Walsh is residing with the Haynes family, and is listed as John A. Alexander, and I believe that is where he picked up the given names of Francis and Isabelle for his parents. In 1910 he is residing with Henry Trask and is listed as Jack Haynes, an adopted son. Where the surname of Walsh came from is a complete mystery; Jack never had a birth certificate, which was a major problem when he filed for social security. When I talked with his granddaughter, Terry Walsh, she had four different stories that Jack passed on about his family. All four are different and none of them had facts that could be verified. The name of his parents are listed on his marriage licence with Josephine Smith, but I think they are made up. One of his stories indicates that he was living in an orphange and that his parents came to visit him and they were well dressed. I could not find him residing in an orphange. Another story indicates his father was in the mafia and he was in an orphange for protection and that his parents lived in New York. Jack Walsh married my grandmother on April 9, 1919 in Akron, Ohio. It is believed he was a friend of John Smith, Josephine's youngest brother. I think he was in Ohio while in the Army. However, on the marriage license he is listed as a book salesman. When we find my grandmother in 1920 she is living as a boarder, along with her sister Martha, in someone's home in Akron. The census was taken in early January and my mother was born February 16, 1920. There is no record found by me of Jack Walsh until 1931. There is a listing in a local directory for a Jack Walsh in Terre Haute, Indiana with a spouse, May. By then he has married Nellie Greenwood and they had a child in 1925. I have never found the family together in a record. It seems the child was boarded out. According to Terry Walsh Nellie was a prostitute and moved around all the time. Both Nellie and Jack died in Vallejo, California.
