Notes

  • Dad enlisted in May 1940. He was training to be a paratrooper but sprained his ankle on a practice jump from a tower. Was sent to Fort Knox as a mechanic for a tank battalion. I know he was in Fort Lewis in 1943 because of the football photos. He went to Europe on January 10, 1945 with his tank battalion. I don’t think he was involved with any fighting. They progressed across Europe driving Germany back to Berlin. The war ended in September 1945 and dad stayed for three months until November 27, 1945 to help with translation as prisoners were released. He could speak Polish and some other slavic languages. He came home on the Queen Elizabeth in December and was discharged. There are only enlistment records and discharge records available for military service so we really don’t know where he was and at what time.
