Known as "Grafton" and "Mac", he was raised on his parents' farm on Keeners Ridge near Herold in Braxton County, WV. As a young adult, he moved to Parkersburg, WV and began a successful career in business. He was the founder of Matheny Motors Company, an automobile dealership which still operates in Parkersburg. He and his wife had one child. Bio by Ronald Decker, his grand nephew.
