Charles was born February 25, 1930 in Grafton, West Virginia to his parents Charles Lewis, Sr. and Hazel Ovelle Shroyer (nee: Marks). Amherst has been his home since 1970. Charles served four years with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict as crew chief and as an aircraft and engine mechanic. Three of the four years were spent in Neubiberg, Germany, where F84 Thunder Jets were hangered, with the 526th Fighter Bomber Squadron and the 86th Fighter Bomber Group. Charles retired from Sheetmetal Workers Local #33 in 1992. He was a life member of Elyria Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1079 and the Amherst American Legion Post #118. His hobbies included fishing, gardening, and ballroom dancing. He especially loved caring for and spending time with his family. Charles leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of fifty-six years, Norma Shroyer (nee: Heaton); his daughter Karen Shroyer of Cleveland, Ohio; his son Kent Shroyer of Amherst; and his grandson Nicholas Mettler of Lorain. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his brother Donald Shroyer. Friends called on Thursday, March 31, 2011 from 5-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services were held Friday, April 1, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Military honors will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. The Rev. N. James Greenawalt, of Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
