Served with his two brothers, Pvt. John Hamlet mortally wounded and captured at Murfreesboro, Tennessee in December, 1862 and died there on February 13, 1863, and Pvt. David M. Hamlet (1836-1919). Joseph was sent to a hospital in February, 1863 and returned in the summer of 1863. His widow Charlotte filed for a Confederate Widow's Pension on June 19, 1905. They were married in 1858 and had seven children (4 boys girls and 3 boys). "One of his comrades dreamed that he saw Joe dead on the battlefield. His Captain told him to go home to his wife and children, but he replied that his bones might bleach on the battlefield rather than disgrace his children.
