Notes

  • The first born son of Douglas and Cona Mae (Harper) Hughes, July 7, 1956, his 6 and 4 year sisters, Vickie and Mickey were over-the-moon with excitement, pride and love! Randy graduated from Madison Heights in 1974, worked for Mathews Market, and in November, married his high school sweetheart, Brenda Ferrell. From that day forward, family was Randy's heart and soul! The little ones came; Cheree, Michelle and Justin, and he gained a second family in Willie and Daffo Ferrell, Grandpa Bedford and Grandma Arngie. There were no in-laws to Randy, just family! Together with Brenda, their home was a constant refuge to many. Baptized as a teen, Randy and Brenda are members of Madison Park Church of God. Without question, his faith and love of God were the foundation upon which he bore his many challenges. A member of UAW 663, Randy worked 15 years at Guide Lamp, many of those years as committeeman. He also was a top-notch salesman for Payton-Wells Ford before the adversity of his diabetes began. At age 11, he began to bowl at Rains Bowling Alley. His passion was inspired by his Dad, and Randy in turn passed that love and skill to his son Justin. He was a 30+ year member of Anderson USBCBA. A close second on his happiness meter was fishing! Then of course came racing…he and his Dad loved NASCAR, but the 34-year ritual of Indy 500 time trials, first weekend, first in line, same identical seats…they were a team!! Coached by the Swanson brothers, Dude and David, they shaped Randy into a pretty good Babe Ruth player in the day…but pride knew no bounds when Randy was watching his grandson, Jayden play baseball!!! True to his roots, Randy was a big country music fan, and vacation memories at Pigeon Forge and Dollywood are shared fondly by his children and grandbabes. Preceding Randy in death were his daughter, Cheree; father, Douglas Hughes; grandparents, Alvin and Jessie Harper and Paskell and Lizzie Hughes; stepfather, Raymond Winkel; nephew, Jamie Lunsford; brother-in-law, Roy Robinson; and special cousins, Terry Lynn (Hughes) Cox, Jesse Paul Hughes, Jr., Donnie Hughes and Rick Musick; and many aunts and uncles. Surviving with precious memories are his wife of 39 years, Brenda (Ferrell) Hughes; son, Justin; daughter, Michelle; granddaughters, Shelby (Ben) Kirkwood and Kinley; grandsons, Jayden and Navin; great grandson, Bennett Kirkwood; newborn great granddaughter, Aubree Kirkwood; mother, Cona Mae Winkel; stepmother, Betty Hughes; sisters, Vickie Robinson, Tammy Hughes and Nikki (Kevin) Watson; brothers, Tim Winkel and Tony (Carla) Hughes; countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and their children; and of course special lifetime friends, all of whom know who they are. Of special note, Uncle Jess Hughes was "designated" Randy's rock after losing his Dad. They finally agreed to call it a tie as to who loved the other more! Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home
