Notes

  • Friday, October 31, 2014, Jess Hughes, 81, peacefully left his earthly journey to join the host of family angels joyously awaiting his arrival. He was born on October 22, 1933 in Livingston, Tenn. to the late Paskell and Lizzie E. (Adams) Hughes. Jess proudly gained the tagline, “The Dealmaker”! When asked recently he guessed he had sold over 4,000+ vehicles in his 50 year career. He had most recently worked with Stanley Chevrolet of McCordsville when he was diagnosed with cancer. He was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ, and worked tirelessly, together with other members in turning the old Meadowbrook School into their new worship home, “Journey…a Church of Christ”. Born and raised in Tennessee, he was the pure essence of what “being country” truly means. Kind-hearted, bigger-than-life itself, his impression of his hero, John Wayne was spot on! His phone ring tone…the Lone Ranger theme! “Have you heard the one about?” his blue eyes twinkled as he told his newest joke! The patriarch of the Hughes family for all these many years, through all triumphs and tragedies he was their Rock. The family Decoration/Reunion Weekend was the highlight of his year. Standing Stone Park, Holly Springs Church of Christ, and family . . . the light of his soul, the sweet music in his heart. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kay A. Hughes; son, Glen A. Hughes; grandchildren, Mandalynn Cox, Kera and Karlee Hughes; step-grandchildren, Kelsey and Lucas Vinson; sisters, Gladys Rollins and Gracie (Bill) Foland; brothers-in-law, George (Alice) King and Ernest Pitts; special family members - nieces, Brenda (Don) Cobb, Cathy Baker, Vickie Robinson, Becky Gremes and Jennifer Welton, nephews, Mark Schwab and Chris King. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jesse Paul Hughes Jr.; daughter, Terri Lynn Cox; brothers, Vadous, Douglas and Glenn Hughes; sister, Carolyn Hughes; brother-in-law, Harvey Rollins. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services - Anderson, 504 W. 9th Street, Anderson, IN. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with calling one hour prior at Journey A Church of Christ, 550 W. 37th Street, Anderson, IN. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park. The family wishes to express deepest thanks and love to the Countryside Manor staff. Their care and concern will forever be remembered. In lieu of flowers donations to help the family pay final expenses will be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
