On Mary Ellen's marriage application for her first husband she lists Bartlett Smith as her father. Martha did not have any children with Bartlett Smith and left Wilkes-Barre to reside in Akron and was residing in Akron in 1920. On the marriage application it lists Mary Ellen's birth place as Wilkes-Barre, but I believe she was born in Ohio in a Critten home for unwed mothers. Martha signed a written statement on the marriage application that Bartlett Smith abandoned his daughter and never contributed to her support and that she obtained a divorce in 1923 and his whereabouts are unknown.
